ATH conversation with Patty M’s Scooter

[Moderator]

We are glad you are interested in practicing talking together with an animal!

To get started, greet the animal and ask if they have time to talk with you. Remember that animals also lead busy lives even though we may not see all that they do. If they aren’t available, check back later.

Introduce yourself and explain why you are reaching out to them: that you are a member of the Animal Talk Coaching & Mastery Club and learning to better communicate with animals and would appreciate their help. You can ask them any questions you want. Typically they do provide a response. Please share your impressions of their personality, energy, how they feel and any insights they may share with you. By sharing what you get, the animal’s person can provide you with feedback and others can jump in too.

Some conversations have been lively, and we’ve learned some amazing insights, and laughed at jokes. Remember that this is a safe place to practice. This is about practice and learning, it is not about getting it perfect. The animals have much to teach us, to share with us and we with them.

Scooter is a soft and loving boy with a balanced energy and laid back personality. His prime purpose is to share his love with his family. He wants to be there for you when you need a pick-me-up. He wants to show everyone they are loved and he is there for them.

He enjoys eating and snuggling close to you. He does watch what’s going on in the house, especially in the kitchen. He says he lives in a beautiful home and thinks he lucked out on that. I asked if he goes outside and I heard, “Not as much as I used to.”

I asked if there is anything he hates and he said conflict, commotion and vacuum cleaners.

He’s not really into toys.

There are other cats in the house but he’s the easiest to deal with. He tries to give the other cats guidance and if they get into trouble, he stays out of it.

He says you are loving and attentive. He tries not to take advantage of your giving nature.

I asked if there was anything that would make him happier and he said he’d like the other animals to be quieter.

Hi Carolyn, welcome to our animal loving family, and thank you for choosing Scooter to connect with.

He’s quite a character, and our relationship has been a work in progress ever since he came to live with me. We met when he showed up at the horse farm that was my second home for many years. Our first encounter was when I mistakenly picked him up without his permission and I got soundly swatted for doing so! Fast forward to when he came to live with me because he kept trying to get in peoples’ vehicles to go home with them and we were afraid for his safety. I always felt from him that he wanted a home to call his own. My other kitties are indoor kitties, and because of the coyotes and other predators that live around me I felt it was better for him to adust to being an indoor kitty also. He tolerated that for as long as he could, and he would occasionally attack me for seemingly no reason. The last time he did, he drew blood in 7 places on one leg. So I had Val connect with him to see what was going on. He was not happy being inside all the time, so after Halloween that year, I let him start going back outside. We now have a schedule that is working for both of us so he’s inside at night and when I’m not at home. He’s a much happier boy these days, and shortly after we made that change, he began sleeping with me at night. He does cuddle close to me, and he does like his food, even though some of it involves him being a mighty hunter when he’s out, which I’m not very fond of.

He’s very independent and definitely has a mind of his own. He really doesn’t interact with the other animals much, but he’s becoming more playful with the other kitties, although Boo doesn’t accept it as play and thinks he’s on the attack. I’m still limited to one-way conversations, so I don’t yet hear what they’re saying to me, which is very frustrating to me.

He is always aware of what is going on in the house, as are all my fur-kids. We have a pretty quiet household, so I’m not sure what he wants from the other animals. Shadow does talk a lot, but he’s a very expressive boy. Maybe that’s what he’s talking about?

Patty, thanks for your feedback and for giving me so much background. After I communicated, I felt it was off a bit. I’m clairaudient and the thoughts did not flow as rapidly as they usually do when I have a good connection. I sent my communication to you to see if my feeling about the connection was right. Now that I see your description of Scooter, I know my connection was weak. He is a more complex character than I understood. So I learned to trust my gut feeling about my connection. Thanks for your help.

It’s possible that some of what you were getting was coming from my other kitties, possibly from Shadow. Some of what you describe sounds more like him. He’s my snuggle-bug.

I only wish I could do as well as you are doing! Keep going!

Hi Patty,

May I try to read Scooter (please disregard anything that does not resonate with you and attribute it to my imagination):

He is a wonderful free and strong spirit. He wants you to be proud of his excellent hunting abilities as if he was saying “wow, look, how good I am at this”. It is a way of getting your attention and to distinguish himself from the crowd. Also, he feels young to me and eager to use his physical abilities while he has still got them. He makes the most use of his abilities. He is proud of himself, he is so quick, it makes him happy. He loves his well-functioning body. He loves being a cat. He loves exploring and trying to catch things that move (not much else to do). Life is so much fun, outside ! Life is supposed to be fun. He values (the risk of) being outside more than (the security of) being inside, though he loves comfort too.

I feel that you are an active person too and love being outside in nature and enjoying all there is. That is what makes you happy too, that is what makes you feel alive. And you feel good when you have achieved your daily chores (although I feel you have a bit too much to do at the moment).

But yes, I do understand your feelings about the birds so very well! Your joy is being turned into a horror.

I am a bird lover myself and had to learn to still love and « forgive » the neighbour’s cat whenever he caught a bird. So it is a big lesson about understanding others, putting yourself in their shoes and accepting (and « forgiving » them) that they have different values in life, that they live their life differently, and to love them still just as they are, unconditionally.
Who (or what) annoys us is one of our biggest teachers in our life. Certainly not easy, I speak out of personal experience, with both humans and animals.

Having said all that : when someone’s happiness is causing your unhappiness then it is quite alright to part ways in a friendly manner. And everybody has the right to decide for themselves when that moment is reached. Sometimes the lesson is to recognize just that.

Try to serve his food lukewarm (not cold, the body of a mouse is warm too).
And I tried to be cleverer than the cat, so find another solution to feed and water the birds.
I think Scooter will only change habit when getting older and less agile. He is determined to enjoy his cat life. Should we not all be just as determined to pursue our happiness.
