How to Give a Dog a Pill: Conversation vs. Command

how to give a dog a pill

How to Give a Dog a Pill, And What To Do When They Won’t Cooperate

Have you noticed that your dog has a mind of their own?

via GIPHY

You’re thinking, “I need to give my dog a pill, it’s for his own good, but he won’t eat it, he’s fighting me and/or running away. Why won’t he just take it?”

Your next thought might be “I’m not sure but maybe I don’t know how to give a dog a pill!”

Then, even when you get some tips on HOW to give your dog a pill, they still won’t cooperate and won’t take it. That’s frustrating.

I once heard from someone who wanted me to tell her dog to take it’s medicine without fighting her about it.

She thought that as an expert animal communicator I should just be able to tell the dog, “take your med” and the dog would do it.

No discussion, no real understanding of the dogs viewpoint, no objections or questions or concerns answered, no conversational dialogue.

She thought that service would be worth maybe $25.

I could just say, “do what I want you to do”, period. The dog happily takes the pill Problem solved.

That would be nice, eh?

Wish I had a magic wand or superpower like that, don’t you?

magic wand

If I did, I’d probably use it on the people I know who won’t do what I tell them to do, like my husband.

I personally think that would be worth a heck of a lot more than $25.

I could go around waving it at all the whackadoodles out there, they would straighten up immediately, and life would be so much better!

Fancy that!

Oh yea, I’d pay a lot more than $25 for such a wonderful tool and ability…

But I digress…

Clearly, she has no clue what goes into changing a behavior like this one.

Animal communication isn’t mind control, it’s a heart to heart conversation.

Her dog has a unique viewpoint all his/her own, and valid reasons for rejecting the medication.

Until we know what those are and have answered their questions so they can agree to take it politely and cooperate, we can’t possibly understand why they object in the first place, what’s not working for them.

And until we understand that? Nothing will change.

I can talk to them until I’m blue in the face to no avail.

I know this because I tried to do it this way when I first started communicating professionally in 1993.

And it’s a common mistake that beginners often make, and yes, I’ve even heard horrifying stories of professional communicators making the same mistake.

What I’ve learned is…

Her dog will have no choice but to continue to resist, trying to be heard, listened to, respected enough to be understood.

But, when we DO listen to them and discuss it heart to heart, mind to mind, things can and do change for the better for all concerned.

how to give a dog a pill 2b

Here’s what we could discover through a heart to heart conversation that would be much more helpful.

Because when we do this the right way, using the art of the conversation 7 step blueprint, their resistance often fades away on it’s own.

The point is to take the time to discover the reasons why they behave the way they do.

For instance:

  • The medication makes the dog feel sick(er), not better.
  • That it causes other problems than the health problem it’s intended to help with.
  • That it hurts the dog’s kidneys or liver or has other bad side effects.
  • That it gives them heartburn, or makes them feel dizzy, their heart races, they feel wobbly, not themselves at all and that is stressful.
  • That it’s the wrong medication.
  • That the way the person is trying to get them to take it feels smothering, stressful, hurtful, causing resentment and frustration for everyone concerned.
  • That they feel forced against their will, and they don’t like being forced..
  • That they don’t even know why they’re being subjected to take the medication in the first place.
  • That it tastes bad or smells terrible.
  • That the real problem is something that the vet and person missed entirely, and if the humans would just LISTEN to the dog, he or she would be happy to TELL them that.
  • That they feel angry about it all, ignored, disrespected, cut off and somehow their attempts to be heard and get their message across are now causing them to be punished, like this is all their fault when in their opinion, the problem is their person!

And so on…

Can you see how knowing the answer to these questions, having this type of conversation, would make all the difference in the world for both you and your dog?

When the conversation is managed correctly, even if the dog is still resisting afterward, we now know WHY they’re resisting, and can take appropriate action to adjust our approach, or change what we’re doing so they can cooperate.

Often, we discover that we the humans are the ones resisting listening to them, not the other way around.

Having a conversation like this requires advanced competency with your communication intuitive abilities and skills.

If you haven’t put in the time and practice yet to be able to do it yet, then don’t give up.

It just means there’s more to learn.

It’s a conversation worth having and a skill worth developing.

“A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step.”

Keep showing up and practicing, get expert coaching and guidance with proper feedback to keep you on track and learning from your mistakes.

Soon, you’ll be enjoying conversations like I’ve described here.

You may even save a life in the process, and wouldn’t that feel good?

These are the complex issues that my clients and students work on (and this is what I help them with in 1:1 private sessions and in live group coaching calls).

My goal is to help highly sensitive empathic animal lovers advance to the highest level possible and even be a successful professional practitioner if you’d like to do that.

“Extremely privileged to be studying with Val…… since I started the journey (rather sporadically and unsuccessfully I may add) 5 years ago, she is the first teacher to emphasize that animal communication is not just that, but a spiritual journey to make us better people, to heal, evolve and grow… so she gives us the best possible resources and guides us personally every step of the way. Thanks Val!”
